What are the Side Effects of Body Detoxification?

Body detoxification entails removal of toxic substances from our bodies. The benefits of detoxification are well known: it helps revitalize our organs, improves our health, prevents diseases and illnesses and provides us with a sense of mental well being. However, one also needs to be aware of the side effects the detoxification process is likely to have on our body. While the side effects may vary in intensity depending on the detoxification treatment you choose, it is important to what the most common effects of body detoxification are.

During the process of detoxification, your body is undergoing a huge change. As toxins get flushed out of your system, you are likely to experience symptoms like headaches, sore throat, nausea, chills and fever. You may also suffer from symptoms like increased urination and intense thirst, lack of appetite, drowsiness or fatigue. You may also suffer from dizziness or

fainting spells. Don’t be alarmed. These are normal reactions to the process of detoxification. However, if these symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks, you may need to end your detoxification program and consult your doctor.

Another side effect of detoxification treatments involves having to cope with withdrawal symptoms. A number of us are addicted to caffeine in the form of coffee, tea or sodas. Those of us who smoke are also addicted to nicotine. A complete detoxification program will involve smoking and dietary restrictions, and for the first week or two, the withdrawal symptoms can be very intense. You may feel tense, anxious and restless and your body is likely to undergo symptoms that are common to flu like cold, congestion, headaches, sore throat, etc. But, withdrawal symptoms also subside within a couple of weeks and you will start feeling better. However, if are having difficulty in coping with the withdrawal symptoms, it is best that you consult your physician.

There are also some psychological side effects of body detoxification. Your detox program is bound to have dietary restrictions and recommendation. If the change in your diet is going to be substantial, you may have difficulty adjusting to the new one. You may not feel satisfied with different or lesser quantities of food, and may experience cravings for your regular food. You are also likely to feel irritable or cranky. This is just because of the adjustments your body is having to make and is nothing to be alarmed about. Lastly, you may feel anxious and restless and this may lead to your having difficulties with sleeping. If this problem continues well beyond the detox program, you need to consult a specialist.
